The Main Street Swift Current organization is now working to preserve the city's oldest area, offering grants to businesses located in the downtown area.

Grants going towards the benefit of the historic district will see money handed out for façade restoration and alterations, building maintenance, downtown beautification, and signage.

The program is meant to protect the historic buildings in the area, as well as making it an attractive consumer area.

A testament to many communities history and small beginnings, Swift Current began as a main street-centric community. As trains rolled into Swift Current, in it's infancy, passengers would file out onto the main drag.

Lloyd Begley, board chair of Main Street Swift Current, said that the organization hopes to preserve Swift Current architecture.

"It keeps your downtown lively... not only the building façades themselves, but on their properties," he said. "That's why there are four or five different granting opportunities that they can tap into, one of which is beautification. Simply something as landscaping, pots, that sort of stuff."

Businesses in the downtown area can be eligible for one grant per project, with each grant providing 50 per cent of the funds needed up to $50,000.

There is no age requirement for buildings which can qualify for the program, only being located in the downtown area will be used as a qualifier.
