Fundraising for the new Herbert Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Store is going better than expected.

In the last 14 months, they've raised $180 thousand of their $240 thousand goal.

"Our big goal right now is to begin building our new building, which will be 62 feet by 110 feet. We've already reached 75 percent in our fundraising, which is the milestone we have to reach before we can begin building and we need to continue to raise another $60 thousand to hopefully pay off this entire project," said Anissa Forest, Manager of the Herbert MCC.

Beyond selling second-hand good for charity, the thrift store is a real hub for the Town of Herbert.

"It's not just a store to come and buy things. It's a place for encouragement -customers come in or need a hug or something, we're here for that. We're not just here for the deals but we're here to minister to our community, work together with our community, advertising for other businesses, local artists, and things like that," Forest said.

The Herbert MCC recently held a $20 campaign and it's been well-received. Forest encourages people to visit their Facebook page, and consider making an online donation, as well.

Once they've raised the $240 thousand, they plan to organize work bees and are hoping for help in plumbing, electrical, drywalling and construction. Half of what is raised at MCC Thrift Stores is sent to the head office and used in places oversees like Nepal and Haiti for disaster relief.
