A bill to repeal the highly-debated long gun registry is one step closer to law after passing a vote in the House of Commons Wednesday night.

"I call it a momentous and historic vote, it's been a long time coming," said Cypress Hills-Grasslands Member of Parliament David Anderson, who had been a long-standing opponent of the registry.

"Orginally it was going to cost $2 million dollars, they've spent $2 billion on it by now, and it really didn't make anyone safer," he added. "We, and so many other people, were tired of them targetting farmers, duck hunters and rural Canadians, so it was good to get this passed."

The bill moved through in a 159-130 majority vote, and it now moves to the Senate for what Anderson feels could be another two to three months before becoming receiving royal assent and becoming law.

Donovan Fehr talked with David Anderson about the passage of the bill through Parliament.
