For the third year in a row, Swift Current city council helping raise awareness around organ and tissue donation.

At last week's city council meeting they proclaimed the week of April 25 to May 1 as Organ and Tissue Awareness Donation Week in Swift Current.

Sammy Khalife attended the meeting via zoom and was pleased to see city council continuing to support organ and tissue donation by proclaiming the week to raise awareness around the service.

"I'm confident they're making a difference in our community," he said in regards to the proclamation. "We don't just do them for the fun of it."

City Councillor Ryan Plewis added that he'd like to see some of the red tape removed from the process of becoming a donor.

"For somebody who's probably relatively well informed about these issues, even I after listening to you twice I don't think I have all of my ducks in a row on organ and tissue donation, which I think is part of the problem," he said. "I've got my health care here with the sticker on it, I'm registered online but I don't have the piece of paper and I for the life of me couldn't tell you where that piece of paper is or how to replace it. In my mind, there's far too many barriers for organ and tissue donation... And it's far too easy to do something about it."

Plewis added that the multitude of steps seems excessive for someone attempting to save lives.
