Although his time on Swift Current city council and as mayor has come to a close, Denis Perrault is hoping his successor and the city's new council succeed.

Next Monday night will be the first time in over 11 years Perrault won't be at Swift Current's council table as he was defeated by mayor-elect Al Bridal last week in his attempt for a second term as mayor and fourth term on council.

"Well, first off, a big congratulations to Al Bridal, to Leanne, to John, Tom, and Ryan on being new representatives for our city council," Perrault said. "And congratulations to Ryan Plewis and Pat Friesen on their re-election."

Perrault joins councillors Ron Toles, Chris Martens, and Bruce Deg as incumbents in the Swift Current municipal election that ended up losing their gig.

"I also want to say a big thank you to George, Ron, Chris, and Bruce, who served alongside with me over the last four years, along with Ryan and Pat," he said. "It was a great experience these last four years we had a chance to see our community grow. We had a chance to see our community come together through many events, volunteer side by side, celebrate our sports teams, our culture, and all the things that I think make Swift Current a very special place."

A few highlights stood out to Perrault as mayor - building friendships and partnerships, the four events Swift Current held during 2019, and the Swift Current Broncos winning a championship in 2018.

"When I think back of all the memories for the last four years, it was working together, it was a chance to meet a lot of people provincially, working together on the city mayors caucus, and getting to meet what I think are some lifelong friends, both with them as well as with our provincial government," he said.

Newly elected city councillor John Wall also played a part in Perrault deciding to join municipal politics in 2009.

"I'd also like to say thank you to John Wall," he said. "He encouraged me to run in 2009 and to his son, Brad, who encouraged me to run for mayor in 2016."

Perrault also noted he was able to serve on council for the past decade-plus because of the support he received from his wife Leah and his son Luc.
