The Saskatchewan Abilities Council held an open house at their Swift Current location on Thursday, where locals could discuss programs and services with the Partners in Employment Staff.

The Abilities Council helps those in need to find or maintain employment, and can assist in job coaching services, resume building and helping individuals through transitional periods in their lives and careers.

Jackie Powell is the local supervisor for Partners in Employment for Swift Current, and says everyone's journey is different.

"Our employers have been really good with our work experiences and when the individual is done with their experience, sometimes they get hired! So that's a great stepping stone for a lot of individuals that are struggling to find that employment they're not getting. What's successful for one person isn't necessarily the same for the next person. We see an increase in confidence, (individuals) being connected to different agencies in the community whether its independent living support or an agency for volunteer work, it's pretty cool."

Powell says a good portion of the clients she deals with directly have a criminal record, and that the organization can help work with the record and not against it.

"We've built up a really good relationship with a number of employers in the community and if the individual is coming through us, we make the recommendation that this person would be suited for this type of job. Yes they have a criminal record, but if employers are able to oversee that, we are able to vouche for a number of individuals."
