The Swift Current Broncos traded in their hockey equipment for work clothes yesterday at Dorie's House.

The youth emergency shelter had sod laid down by the WHL team, in hopes of kick-starting growth to the yard during these unseasonable temperatures, before the winter weather hits.

Betty McDougall, Executive Director of the Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter, shares how grateful they are to have had the Broncos help out.

"Well this is just tremendous - It really exemplifies the community spirit that we have in Swift Current.

There has been someone that steps up every step of the way. We were looking at installing sod here, and how it would be done - and who could.

The Broncos stepped up and brought all these young guys that have lots of energy and away they go - here they are almost done," she said.

McDougall also explains the importance of the Broncos extending the sense of teamwork beyond the rink and outside of the team.

"Something that the Broncos have done since they have moved to town is really being a community team.

I have seen so many examples of the team contributing to the community whether it's in schools or with community agencies.

Coming to Dorie's House is just another example of that and we truly appreciate it," she said.

With the grand opening and open house for the shelter right around the corner, the Executive Director detailed the overall mood within the organization.

"The excitement is right up there. We are very excited about the idea that we'll have Dorie's House in Swift Current. We're also excited to finally show off the building," she said.

McDougall also explains the sense of relief stemming from the nearly finished project.

"Young people will have a safe place to stay and it's nice to see the community coming together for a huge need in our region," she said.

The three-day open-house event is taking place Monday, November 14th until Wednesday, November 16th from 12pm-8pm each day.
