Swift Current Fire Department completed a practice burn this past Saturday.

The exercise was completed on seven buildings in a farmyard located east of Highway 4 and south of the Swift Current Creek.

Chris Haichert, Temporary Deputy Fire Chief spoke on how the abandoned buildings were the perfect test.

"We had an opportunity (that) came our way for the use of a farmyard and some of the buildings for some training. On Saturday our guys decided to burn it and we were able to train on it. It turned out to be a perfect day for training and for us to practice our skills," he said Monday afternoon.

The temporary Deputy Fire Chief explains the necessity of an exercise like this.

"It gave us the opportunity to train on some equipment with the live scenario with the fire. Hopefully, these skills that we practiced can help make our members more effective and efficient for when the real alarms do go off," he said.

Haichert says there aren't a lot of fires in Swift Current, so the training practice was vital for the department.
