The 2022 Winter Olympics are getting underway this week in Beijing with competition actually starting this evening with mixed doubles curling, and then Canada faces Switzerland late tonight to start the women's hockey tournament.

The games will begin in earnest with the opening ceremony on Friday morning with women's hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin and short track speed skater Charles Hamelin leading Team Canada as this year's flag bearers.

Canada has had no shortage of memorable Winter Olympic moments-- after all, we are naturally a winter sports powerhouse-- but one moment that stood out for me was when Canada won gold in men's hockey in Vancouver in 2010. Sidney Crosby's "golden goal" touched off a lot of excitement and celebrations across the country, and it was the perfect way to wrap up what had been an historic Olympics on home soil.

I took a trip to Toronto in 2016 and visited the Hockey Hall of Fame, where they had on display the net, puck and Crosby's stick and gloves from that game...

Other memorable Canadian Winter Olympic moments for me include the late Sandra Schmirler winning Canada's first-ever curling gold medal in 1998, Hayley Wickenheiser and her team overcoming adversity to beat the Americans for Canada's first women's hockey gold medal at Salt Lake City in 2002, with the men ending a long gold medal drought for Canada a few days later, and freestyle skier Alex Bilodeau winning not just the first gold medal for Canada at the Vancouver Olympics, but an historic first gold medal for Canada at an Olympic Games hosted in this country.
