The Cypress Health Region have recently instituted a more secure way for delivering medications, fluids, and nutrients at precisely controlled rates through an IV pump.

The piece of technology that will provide this service to the health region is the new SMART pump technology.

Racquel Roche, Program Manager of Acute Inpatients explained the benefits of the new technology.

"The pump features error reduction software to assist health care providers in programming and calculating dose and delivery rate. When used they help prevent IV medication errors and reduce patient error in both acute and home care settings," Roche said.

The SMART pump technology also gives the Cypress Health Region a benefit moving forward as well.

"It's an addition to increasing patient safety, we are wirelessly connected so we (can) download the drug library. It can collect data for future quality improvements as well at both regional and provincial levels," she said.

The SMART pump began being implemented in the CHR on October 3rd and has been completed in Cabri, Climax, Eastend, Gull Lake, Herbert, Leader, Mankota, Maple Creek, Ponteix, Shaunavon, and Swift Current.
