Today is the 66th annual Human Rights Day world-wide.

It celebrates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and two years later, the Assembly passed a resolution to observe the 10th December of each year as Human Rights Day.

Local MP David Anderson is opposition critic for International Human Rights and Religious Freedom and shared his thoughts.

"I've been involved with human rights issues over few years as part of my portfolio. My interest certainly goes deeper than that, I've had an interest in religious freedom around the world the last six or seven years. It's important that we take a moments to take reflect on the rights we have and the rights so many other people are struggling to achieve," he said Friday morning.

Citizens from over 80 different countries have made Swift Current and the southwest their home, greatly diversifying the region.

Respect, inclusion, and equality are just a sample of many fundamental rights for humans.

Mayor Denis Perrault commends Swift Current's ability to showcase the diverse community's care for all human rights.

"I think they've done an extremely great job thanks to Icasiana and her board and team at the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre - I feel they've gone out of their way to do that," he said.

Furthermore, the Mayor of Swift Current discusses how he and the city want all people to continue to be able to have those rights.

"Some things that I'm really proud of, for us as a city, is that we've done a lot more Open-Houses in the last few years.

They welcome the public and newcomers to share their thoughts on what they believe their Swift Current should be," he said.

Perrault looks forward to continuing Swift Current's ability to be a safe and caring community, respecting the rights of all of its residents.

In addition it is traditionally today that the Nobel Peace Prize are awarded for outstanding contributions in peace.
