You will have one more month to recycle any old fridges or freezers you may still have lying around.

Since 2010, SaskPower has been collecting old fridges and freezers across the province. However, the program is now coming to an end, with a success of around 33,000 units being collected over the six years.

Director of customer programs at SaskPower, Janson Anderson, said the program has reached its lifespan - much like the appliances it collected.

"We basically got to a point where our research is indicating that we've been fairly successful in collecting some of the biggest power-guzzling fridges and freezers that are out there to this point," he said.

While there are still some fridges out there, Anderson said it's time to start looking at different technologies and products which can lead to new and different ways for customers to save in the future.

For instance, by replacing a fridge from the 1980's with a newer and more energy efficient model, Anderson said customers could save up to $180 annually. Replacing a fridge from the 1990's could save you around $130.

With around 33,000 fridges recycled, Anderson said that translates to around 4.6 megawatts of power saved, which is enough power to provide electricity to 4,700 homes across the province.

"This particular program has definitely had a positive impact in a number of different ways," Anderson said.

Anderson wouldn't disclose anything interesting found inside fridges or freezers that were picked up. He acknowledged, however, that the vast majority were cleaned before SaskPower received them.

Some of the most common era of fridges included ones from the 1980's (30 per cent) and the 1970's (29 per cent).
