Saskatchewan residents will have to get used to dialling with an area code for all calls in a couple of years.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced Friday that a new "639" area code will be implemented in the province starting in May of 2013.

Darcee MacFarlane with SaskTel Corporate Communications says the current "306" area code was running out of numbers, saying the Canadian Numbering Administration determined that the current area code would be exhausted by May 2013.

She adds the new area code will be overlaid throughout Saskatchewan, meaning dialling the area code for a local call will soon be necessary.

MacFarlane adds implementing the "639" area code will be a complex process, saying in calling areas where "306" is used up, the CNA will release blocks of 10,000 numbers with the area code "639", and both area codes will be used interchangably for any new customer requests.
