On Monday night, an update was given on the Western Canada Summer Games - which comes to Swift Current in 2019.

Co-Chairs for the Summer Games, Melissa Shaw and Mark Benesh, presented their projected statistics for the event.

According to the Co-Chairs, approximately 10,000 people will visit southwest Saskatchewan during the games. That number excludes the 2500+ athletes in attendance, as well as volunteers.

Melissa Shaw shares that for an event of this size, volunteers will be crucial for the mid-August event's success.

"We're going to be looking for roughly 2200 volunteers for the duration of the games. So we'll be recruiting from not only Swift Current, but the surrounding area as well. We're hoping to get lots of people showing great interest in it. It's going to be a fantastic ten days and a really exciting time for the community," she said.

The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will be the largest multi-sport event ever to be hosted in the southwest and will run from August 9-17.

Upon receiving a signed agreement from the Saskatchewan government, the committee for the games say they will be able to "start getting things rolling".

As the games get closer to getting underway, Shaw says information sessions will be set up. A website will also be launched to provide the ability for volunteers to register and express areas they're interested in.

Until an official call for volunteers is made, Co-Chair Shaw suggests those individuals wanting more information can contact Swift Current's Western Canada Summer Games office at wcsg2019@swiftcurrent.ca or call the office at (306) 778-1678.
