People from all over made their way to Swift Current for the 81st Frontier Days, including members of the RCMP Traffic Services Unit.

Five officers from Swift Current and Moose Jaw teamed up over Frontier Days and the long weekend to make sure that those enjoying themselves and driving through the city were doing it safely and within the rules of the road.

Corporal Mike Young, team leader for the RCMP Traffic Services Unit in Swift Current, said it was a busy and successful weekend for the officers.

"Over the weekend and we will include the Wednesday of Frontier Days, both Swift Current and Moose Jaw police services collectively ended up making just over 200 contacts with motorists within the City of Swift Current," he said.

Over that period just over 70 charges were laid, with 104 written warnings and 55 inspection tickets issued.

Of those 70 charges, five were distracted driving tickets, 30 were aggressive driving tickets, nine seatbelts tickets were issued, along with 25 other varying offences.

Young said 20 unregistered motor vehicles were issued tickets.

"That's a little bit out of the norm for us to be that many unregistered motor vehicles, but it was prevalent over the weekend."

Young said that overall it was a successful operation, but he is most pleased that there were no impaired driving offences issued.

"Obviously people were thinking while they were partaking in the fun-filled events over the weekend and were keeping things under wrap in that regards," Young said. "When we do end up coming into a community, especially with five traffic officers in the community with their prime focus being impaired interdiction, for us to come back and see that there were no impaired, that's always a plus for us."

Young added that the next time residents would see a join operation will be at 'Shake the Lake' in Lac Pelletier, and when the August long weekend rolls around.
