School Zone 2014

Police issued just shy of 2000 speeding tickets throughout the month of September as part of SGI's province-wide traffic safety spotlight on school zone safety.

"During the month police all around the province issued 760 tickets to drivers speeding in school zones, as well as some other tickets," said Kelley Brinkworth, Manager of Media Relations for the Crown Insurer. "There were also 425 tickets for improper or non-seatbelt use, 164 tickets for failing to stop at a red light or stop sign, 160 tickets for cellphone use while driving, and 71 impaired driving-related offences."

Brinkworth says the amount of speeding tickets issued is actually a decrease from previous months.

"We actually had over 3700 speeding tickets in August, and more than 4000 speeding tickets in July, so when you look at it that way and compare to the previous months, we've actually seen a decrease," she added. "Still far too many tickets though when you consider that."

Brinkworth adds school zones are not considered high-collision areas, but the risk remains because of the vulnerability of children.
