For Brad Appel, the President of Swift Current Minor Girls Softball, calling 2020 a "challenge" is a bit of an understatement.

Speaking with Swift Current Online after the group's AGM on Wednesday, Appel said that there were some highlights.

"We're affiliated with Softball Sask. So we did work with them. And we had the opportunity to have 90 girls come out and register and so we created house teams. And they actually go to play and practice for all of July and some of August. So I think that was a success."

Normally a part of the Sandhills Softball League each season, a decision was made in early April that since some other communities could not put teams together due to the pandemic, that season was cancelled.

Registration for the new season typically starts in March and runs to the beginning of April in order to see how many players they register and therefore the number of teams that they will enter into the Sandhills league. While typically hitting the diamond at the end of April or beginning of May with competition play beginning shortly after.

Apple says that there has been no word yet on whether or not that will happen in 2021, but he says they can try to be optimistic and wait and see.

"At this point it's hopeful. Right now if there are any indoor sessions or training, it's capped at 8. But again, it's sort of a wait-and-see, but try to optimistic and hope that the year will be fairly normal. It'll all depend on our COVID numbers."
