The advance polls to determine the new MLA for Swift Current are underway.

On day one, Swift Current had 291 people vote for their favourite candidate, a number that is down from the 2016 general election which saw 338 people cast their ballot on the first day.

Tim Kydd, a spokesperson for Elections Saskatchewan, said that typically a byelection sees fewer people vote than a general election.

"Advance polls will be open over the weekend from noon to seven, and then advance voting then again on Monday and Tuesday," Kydd said. "Bring your ID with you. If you have your voter information card, bring it along. If you're not registered to vote that is no problem you can still register in person, it just takes a little longer to hit the registration table."

Kydd noted that in the last general election they saw the percentage of people voting drop, but the number of votes went up as they had more registered voters.

In the general election in 2016, the Swift Current had the highest turnout of all the 61 constituencies with just over 60 percent of the registered voters voting.

Advance polls in Swift Current are at the Swift Current Mall, Unit 403 at 1 Springs Drive.

The final day for voting in the Byelection is Thursday, March 1.
