Sharon Schauenberg made history following the municipal election in Assiniboia last week.

With 603 votes, Schauenberg became the first woman to ever be elected as mayor in the town’s 108-year history. She takes over for Bob Himbeault, who decided not to seek re-election.

While it was a great accomplishment, Schauenberg pointed out that she feels she was elected for the person she is in the community.

Along with Schauenberg will be six new councillors coming to the table.

She said she is looking forward to what they will bring to the table.

“We have some people on this council that have lived in this community all their lives. So, the knowledge they bring to the table as a business person as whatever they may do can only help us go forward and be of benefit.”

Those elected to council include Bob Ellert, Kent Fettes, Patrick Grondin, Graham Harvey, Peter Kordus and Paul Tendler.

Schauenberg said her vision is to see sustainability in the community, attracting new business and keeping essential services.

The community is already fundraising for the new Southland Co-op Arena to replace the Civic Centre Arena.

The Golden South Wind Project wind farm is being constructed outside of the town.

Schauenberg gave an update on the wind farm.

“It's coming. We had the one up and now I believe there might be nine of them up. I don't know that they're going to be operational yet this year, but they are moving as fast as they can,” she said.

“The delay in some of it is actually getting the equipment in the parts up from the U.S.”

The wind farm will have a capacity of about 200 Megawatts and is expected to be completed next year.
