The Saskatchewan government has introduced a bill that would make it easier for people with intimate images of them being circulated to win a civil court case.

The Privacy Amendment Act would shift the burden of proof from the plaintiff to the person circulating an image or video. It would then be up to the defendant to prove they had a reasonable basis to spread the material.

If the bill passes, the plaintiff would also be able to take the matter to small-claims court, as well as the Court of the Queen's Bench - where they can already go. The government says through small claims (under $30,000) they'd have a quicker, less-expensive court process.

It is also a criminal offence in Canada for someone to circulate an intimate image or video of someone else if it was taken under a reasonable expectation of privacy.
