Residents at the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri and seniors with mobility issues in the surrounding area now have a safe and reliable way to move around the community.

Staff from PHCC and community members from Cabri and surrounding area raised over $100,000 in 6 months to buy a handivan, ideal for those with mobility restrictions.

The vehicle is owned privately and didn't come from the Cypress Health Region as the money was fundraised.

"Our first fundraiser was a Johnny Cash night, a gentlemen and his wife sings the songs and we packed this place full of people, says Larissa Gader is the Health Services Manager at the Prairie Health Care Centre. "After that donations flooded in! The City of Cabri donated over $30,000 to us."

Prior to the Handivan, the only method of transportation for residents and those with mobility issues was through an ambulance, which Gader says was not a good use of the service.

"We've already had it out two or three times, one resident went to a rodeo and hadn't been to one in years. He is 98 years old. Some went to a greenhouse, they were able to pick some flowers. It has been awesome for the little amount of time we've had it."

Residents and locals were able to take part in a BBQ celebration Wednesday.
