RCMP from the Swift Current detachment is alerting residents to a scam that is underway in the region.

A caller, claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency, begins to threaten or use aggressive language to frighten people into paying for fictitious debt. Recipients of the call have been threatened with criminal charges, jail time and even deportation if payment is not received.

The callers has been asking for personal information such as Social Insurance numbers, credit card and bank account numbers and even passport numbers.

Any call asking for any of this information is to be considered fraudulent and you are to report this immediately. A caller to Swift Current Online reported that she received a call of this nature. “I was woke up by a phone call that said the gentleman was an officer from Revenue Canada and that there was a warrant out for my arrest.” The caller, who asked to not be identified, hung up immediately.
