west end fire 2

The Swift Current Fire Department has revealed the cause of the recent Westend Grocery store fire.

"There were some issues with the compressors that pool the refrigerator system in the building," said Swift Current Fire Chief Denis Pilon. "It appeared to be related to those compressors."

The fire gutted the store on 6th Avenue NW and Herbert Street.

It was first discovered when a fire department deputy smelled smoke and located the burning store.

By the time fire fighters arrived it was too late to save the building.

The fire department and the the insurance company have jointly decided the store is a safety hazard and the building will be demolished within the next week.
