Canadian Border Services Agency are reminding travelers to plan ahead before hitting the road for their summer vacations or long weekend trips.

Communications Officer with the agency, Luke Reimer provides travelers with some helpful tips.

"So we just ask travelers to plan ahead for possible delays at the border. Make sure you have all of your identification in order. Make sure you have your receipts and know all the merchandise you bought and just have that ready for the border services officer so you can make a full declaration and we can get you on your way as soon as possible."

In terms of exemptions Reimer says a trip for 24 hours or 48 hours can make all the difference.

"So for personal exemptions for same day shopping when you have been away for less than twenty four hours there is no exemption for goods that are tax and duty free. If you have been out of the country for twenty four hours or more it is a two hundred dollar exemption and for forty eight hours or more it is an eight hundred dollar exemption. So that is good to know ahead before you buy things in the United States."

Travelers can also consult the CanBorderApp which uses border wait time data and Geo location and mapping services to help travelers have a better experience.

Those that have questions about items that can be brought back can call the border information services at 1800-461-9999 before they leave and have their questions answered.
