The Chinook School Division's official September 30th enrolment numbers for the 2014-15 school year show an increase of five students from last school year.

"We did project a decrease for this coming year, so it's a nice surprise," said Joanne Booth, Communications Coordinator for the School Division. "We have 5875 students between the public and the Hutterian schools, and with the home school students, our total is 6011 students throughout all of Chinook."

Booth added a number of rural schools saw significant enrolment increases, with Frontier increasing by 19 students, Consul up by 8 and Fox Valley up by 10. She noted Herbert and Leader increased by 9 and 15, respectively, after both those schools had decreases in 2013-14.

Throughout Swift Current's public schools, Booth said overall enrolment increased by 13 to 2422 students on September 30th.

"It's hard to go school-to-school with the increases and decreases, as there were going to be expected fluctuations with all of the movements, changes and grade configurations at some of the schools, and with Ecole Centennial opening," she added. "That was to be expected that there wouldn't be a huge fluctuation, but we are up by 13 throughout the city."

Booth said schools that saw enrolment decreases this year included Wymark and Shaunavon, mostly due to out-migration of families, and Maple Creek has seen increases at both their high school and at Sidney Street School, ending a recent trend of enrolment decreases.

She added that the School Division will continue to look at enrolments to determine any trends or anomalies.
