The City of Swift Current will be upgrading its infrastructure and operations fleet for less money than originally anticipated.

Swift Current city council unanimously approved a motion Monday night to buy 2020 Freightliner from Regina's Commercial Truck Equipment Co. for $211,666.10 GST excluded.

That price tag the City will pay is significantly under the $275,000 they had in the 2019 capital budget to replace their 2006 Freightliner Tandem Gravel Truck.

"I'd just like to point out that it came in quite a bit under budget which is nice to see once in a while, it helps us in the long run," Swift Current City Councillor Bruce Deg said.

The Freightliner cab and chassis will be provided to Commercial Truck Equipment Co. by Swift Current's Warner Industries.

"My understanding is that the cab is where the driver sits and the chassis which is what the gravel box would be at the end this is being supplied locally, basically, as part of a sub-contract, I suppose," Swift Current City Councillor Ryan Plewis said. "Commercial Truck is buying that from them, finishing the project and selling the final product back to the City of Swift Current."

Two other bids were submitted to the City through SaskTenders, one from Swift Current's Redhead Equipment for a Mack brand truck that would cost almost $242,000, and the other bid was made by Summit Motors of Medicine Hat for an International make truck for around $226,500.

The 2006 Freightliner Tandem Gravel Truck will be sold off by the City through a surplus equipment sale.
