The City of Swift Current has a new lawyer in their corner after the position became available for the first time in over four decades.

Swift Current city council appointed MacBean Tessem's Logan Spearing to the gig Monday night taking over for Murray Walter. The latter provided the service to the City for 41 years before retiring in September of 2021.

Tim Marcus, the CAO for the City of Swift Current, said the search to fill the job had been ongoing since the fall.

"Upon a throughout review of proposals received, MacBean Tessem's submission provided a similar rate arrangement and qualifying accommodation as the previous City solicitor, which worked extremely well for many years," he said.

According to Marcus, the job entails a variety of expertise the City relies on.

"The duties of a City solicitor is to provide legal, strategic, and business advice to city council and senior administration with a knowledge and understanding of the City's strategic goals and objectives," he said.

Spearing was on-hand at council to introduce himself to his newest colleagues just before he was officially appointed.

"They reached out to me toward the end of last year with the proposal," Spearing said. "I had a chance to speak with Mr. Walter, he spoke very highly of the position. It was a good opportunity and I was happy to accept the position."

From Swift Current, Spearing joined the firm in 2011 as a summer student and worked his way up the ladder being named a partner in 2015.
