We are all enjoying the water in different ways this summer and the city of Swift Current wants to make sure we're doing it safely.

They're participating in National Drowning Prevention Week with daily activities at Fairview Pool.

"Every day between 2pm and 5pm we've got activities and games going on at the pool here," said Lifeguard and Instructor Kelsey Meyer. "We go from boat safety to ice safety to improving swimming skills... all kinds of stuff."

The activities are primarily aimed at a younger demographic.

"For the most part we gear towards school aged kids," Meyer added. "Anywhere from 6 and up."

This is something the recreation and parks department has focused on for several years now.

"The goal for drowning prevention week is just to raise awareness in Canada about the risk of drowning," Meyer added. "We've got all these activties and games planned. All kinds of water smart messages for the kids and families that show up."

"We have a lot of people who take to the water every year especially in the summer with so many lakes around Swift Current. We've got the creek and the pool... it's really important that everyone understands how to respect the water and how to be safe."
