Some colder weather has helped the City of Swift Current get their big outdoor rinks opened as of today.

Six consecutive days with minus temperatures coupled with lots of flooding allowed the City to open the rinks at Highland, Riverdene, Westside, South Side, and North Hill.

Michael Newell, the park's superintendent for the City of Swift Current, said a few rinks are looking better than other right now.

"It varies from rink to rink, the South Side rink is probably the weakest one at this point, we're still having spots where we're having a little bit of asphalt showing up, so we're getting out there trying to flood as much as possible," he said. "I would say the services up at Highland and Westside are very good and good enough to play on."

It's not all positive news for the Westside rinks as the City has to scrape the small rink as they found some rocks on the ice sheet.

"Unfortunately someone decided to throw some pea gravel onto the small rink over on the Westside so that definitely has some of its own challenges," Newell said. "If we don't (get the rocks out) and we just started flooding over it continuously, once it starts warming up, that pea gravel would start shooting up again and then you're really dealing with an uneven surface that you don't want anybody skating on."

The City is hoping to have the smaller rinks opened in the coming days.
