Water levels in Swift Current Creek through Elmwood Park have dropped from their peaks last week

The City of Swift Current is still keeping an eye on water levels in the Swift Current Creek as we head into the long weekend.

Flows in the creek are now around 1200 cubic feet per second, compared to the peak flows of 3750cfs reported last week, and are expected to remain stable or rise slightly this weekend.

Releases from Duncairn Dam are expected to remain at 1000cfs, and the reservoir has enough capacity to accomodate modest increases in runoff.

The city will keep pathways and streets around the creek closed through the weekend at least, and they are warning residents to keep a safe distance away from the water.

Meanwhile, officials are still expecting some of the worst flooding in the Frenchman River basin since 1952, with a delayed runoff of a large snowpack in the Cypress Hills. Warmer temperatures could result in runoff in that area occurring as early as this weekend.

The RM of Val Marie is calling for volunteers to help with sandbagging to prepare for flooding today and tomorrow. Those willing to help are asked to report to the sandbagging area at the corner of Highways 4 and 18 at 6:00am and 2:00pm each day.
