Climate change is becoming more of a frontline issue, new ideas and more sustainable ways of living are popping up all over the southwest.

The beautiful 'land of the living skies' is home to only three per cent of Canada's overall population, yet it is the third highest emitter among provinces for carbon emissions in Canada.

In fact, Sask. has one of the highest emissions per capita in the entire world. Sask. residents produce a whopping 246 per cent more tonnes of emissions than Canada's national average.

"One of the best things you can do to lower global emissions if that's the goal, is use Canadian LNG," said Jeremy Patzer, member of parliament for Cypress Hills-Grasslands area, when asked what could be done to combat climate change if the Sask. government scraps the carbon tax.

Choosing domestic or locally sourced products can greatly help reduce the output of carbon emissions. Whether that's oil and gas, home products, or food.

Local shopping is made easy with one of the southwest's favourite sustainable stores, with around 98 per cent of this Swift Current company's products coming from within Canada.

"We sell refillable products that are also clean, ethically sourced, and sustainable," said Jillian Thiessen, co-owner of The Fill.

The Fill has body products, hand and dish soaps, cleaning supplies, shampoos, phthalate-free candles, lotions, kombucha, and more.

"We get all of our stuff in bulk which uses a lower amount of packaging and stuff like that," Thiessen said. "You're really reducing your carbon footprint in shipping costs, as well as putting money into your own town which means we can continue to build up our community.

"If you're ordering everything off of Amazon you don't know where stuff comes from, you don't if there's child labour, you don't know where your money goes sort of thing," Thiessen explained. "I know where all the ingredients come from, we know who makes them and if they get a living wage, and stuff like that."

By choosing to shop locally at businesses like The Fill, it can make an impact on reducing unnecessary emissions.
