The Craik Eco-Centre was destroyed by fire on Friday.

The Eco-Centre, which opened in 2004, was located on the north side of highway 11 near the town, about 75 kilometres northwest of Moose Jaw.

Reeve for the RM of Craik, Hilton Spencer, described Friday's scene to DiscoverMooseJaw.com

“Some of the people going by or some of the people that live closer saw the smoke. They have no idea what started it yet. I think the fire inspector is coming out on Monday, so he will go through it. It took it all; it’s just a pile of rubble on the ground.”

The Eco Centre was constructed with straw bales and had geo-thermal heat. The multi-purpose building featured a restaurant, meeting rooms and housed the pro shop for the Craik golf course.

Hilton Spencer is the Reeve for the RM of Craik, and detailed the environmentally-friendly construction that went into the eco-centre.

“We saved all the beams out of the elevators that they tore down in Craik, so that was kind of the main structure was all these twelve by twelve beams. It was built out of straw, they used durham straw because a little better insulation just regular square bails. It was a beautiful building one of its kind and I don’t think we will ever see another one like it now.”

The Eco-Centre officially opened in 2004.
