Despite only being in the first year of a new three-year program at the Cypress Regional Hospital, the Women and Children's Unit has already received a recognition award for the Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently (moreOB) initiative.

Nursing Unit Coordinator Carol Wells explains the program.

"So basically the whole premise of the program is for patient safety and everything that we do works towards that. So learning everything, everyone has the same knowledge base and talks in the same terminology so that were all on the same page and hopefully the patients have a better outcome," she said.

The team received the award for outstanding performance in the application of knowledge, commitment and teamwork. To obtain the award, each member of the team needed to make eighty percent in every area of study and Wells says most of the team were in the ninetieth percentile.

The group is comprised of nursing staff, physicians, specialists, midwives and other staff at the hospital.

Wells adds that participating in the program is about bettering themselves for their patients.

"We want our patients to have the best experience they can when they come in to have a baby in our unit, and we admit we don't know everything and we are willing to learn and were willing to move forward with what's best practice and what gives the best outcomes for patients and their babies."

The second year of the three-year program will see the team working on emergency drills so that when situations happen they are better prepared to deal with it quickly and work well as a team.

Wells would like to thank the health region for  running the program and also every member of the team.

"It only works if everyone is on the same page," said Wells.
