There has been a spike in drownings throughout the province this summer.

 

Just this past weekend two young people drowned, including a three-year-old girl from the Webb area, and 6 more have drowned in the province in recent weeks.

 

This week is Drowning Prevention Week, and annual public awareness campaign hosted by the Lifesaving Society.  Shelby Rushton is the CEO of the Lifesaving Society:

 

 

Rushton says drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death in Canada:

 

 

Rushton adds in settings where there is a trained lifeguard on duty, no one has drowned in the past 9 years.
