Healthy lunches provide children with the nutrition and energy they need to learn, concentrate in class, grow and be physically active.

That from Dietician Jayne Trojack who is reminding parents as they start preparing their children for another school year that including healthy options in their lunch kits is important. She notes sometimes this can be a very difficult task for parents but planning ahead is crucial. Trojack says you can plan a whole week worth of lunches and shop accordingly or be creative and use homemade leftovers to your advantage. She adds it is also important to include your children in the process, this way they get to learn about healthy foods and have a say in adding their favourite healthy options to the meal.

Trojack says after the planning is done find time where you and your child can prepare the lunch together, this can include cutting up vegetables, washing fruit or putting their sandwich together. She adds this will help teach your child healthy eating habits that will follow them for the rest of their life.

Trojack adds when planning your child's lunch remember to include all four food groups and two food groups for mid-day snacks.

She says there are unlimited healthy food options and encourages parents not to use sandwiches everyday as that can get quite boring. Trojack instead suggests a chicken and apple whole wheat pita with carrot sticks and a yogurt cup or a tomato and cheese sandwich on a whole grain bun with a pear and a cup of milk. She adds healthy snack options can also be easy to put together such as fruit with yogurt, multi grain crackers with cheese, healthy whole wheat muffins or orange slices.

Trojack also reminds parents to practice proper food safety and help make sure the lunch kits stay cold until lunch time. She says this can include the use of an ice pack or even frozen juice box or bottle of water. Trojack would also like to highlight that some schools have rules for what foods can be brought into the building due to allergies, and encourages parents to look into them before preparing lunches.
