A long-time Canadian sportscaster who was originally from the southwest has died.

Bill Stephenson was born in Elrose before moving to British Columbia, and then went to Toronto in 1960 where he covered the CFL's Toronto Argonauts for CFRB radio, and also was on CTV's football telecasts in the 70's and 80's.

He covered a number of other major events including first sub-four-minute mile run at the 1954 British Empire Games in Vancouver, and the 1972 Canada-Soviet Union Summit Series. He is also a member of both the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the Canadian Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Stephenson died Tuesday night in Toronto at the age of 85. His funeral will be held in Mississauga on Saturday.
