school bus

Back to school time is just around the corner, and Staples wants to fill a bus with school supplies for local kids who might not be able to afford it.

Studies show one in three students will start the school year without proper supplies, putting them behind their fellow students from the first day of school.

"Chinook School Division has donated us a school bus, and we are looking to raise supplies or money donations so we can donate school supplies to the underpriveledged kids within town. Most kids do not have the resources to go to school with everything so we would just like to see them get off with a great start on going back to school," said General Manager at our local Staples, Sharleen Thoreson.

The bus, located outside of the Swift Current Staples location, will be filled to the brim with school supplies today from 11 to 4pm with help from the community.

"We've got great community support, we've got lots of donations, right now what we are in need of is binders, back packs, calculators, water bottles, but on the same note, even a dollar, every donation adds up at the end of the day," said Thoreson.

Kids that need these supplies can fill out an application at one of severl organizations around town.

"Through the United Way and the Salvation Army, they have helped us reach out to the organizations, so there is multiple places in town where the kids can pick up these forms, Camps is one, Southwest Crisis Services, Family Resource Center, Early Childhood Intervention Program, The Centre, Fresh Start, Maverick, Ministry of Social Services and The Salvation Army. At The Center on August 21st from 9am to 12pm all the kids that applied can come and pick up their supplies," said Thoreson.

School supplies and donations can be brought into the Staples store until September 6th.
