A busy start to the day for emergency crews in Swift Current, following an early morning fire.

A family in Swift Current was very lucky to escape a house fire in the city early Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the home on the zero-block of 7th Avenue Northeast at around 1:00 in the morning to put out the fire that left a house heavily damaged.

Fire Chief Denis Pilon says the fire was started when candles were left unattended after an evening barbecue in the backyard.

Adding to the danger, Pilon adds none of the smoke detectors in the home were working, as the batteries were taken out.

He says this is another reminder to never leave lit candles unattended, and make sure all smoke alarms are working properly.
