A woman charged with fraud and the theft of a large sum of money from the Town of Kyle made an initial court appearance yesterday.

26-year-old Elizabeth Downey of Strathmore, Alberta, who spent time as Director of the Kyle Rec Board a few years back, was charged with one count of fraud under $5000, 3 charges of false pretences under $5000, and 8 charges of theft under $5000.

Police began their investigation into the case after the town noticed $18,000 missing from it's accounts.

Downey is scheduled to make another court appearance on August 22 to enter a plea.
