There's a first time for everything, and for many Canadians, this year will be their first time casting a ballot in a federal election, whether they've just turned 18 or are a new Canadian citizen.

Leanne Nyirfa with Elections Canada says the biggest thing is to make sure to bring your photo ID.

Nyirfa adds that if you don't have any identification at all, someone can swear for you.

Another big thing to remember is which poll to go to on May 2nd, or the final day of advance polls on Monday. Nyirfa says you can get that information by calling toll-free at (800) 463-6868, look at the voter Information card you received in the mail, or use the voter information service at Elections Canada's website.
