The biggest annual event of the year in Swift Current is around the corner, and members of the community are welcoming the tradition back to town with a week of anticipation.

Hosted by the Swift Current Ag & Ex, Frontier Days has had something for everyone in their 80 previous years, and with the next iteration of the event on the horizon, the same looks to be true.

Today marks the start of Frontier Days Week in Swift Current, thanks to a proclamation at Monday's City Council meeting.

The week spans from June 23 to 29.

Attending council to give more information on the week, Tracey Stevenson, general manager of Ag & Ex, as well as Jenny Hattum, Frontier Days ambassador.

Stevenson gave some background on the longtime celebration of pioneer lifestyle and community fun-fest.

"The greatest show in the southwest, Frontier Days, hosts the second biggest outdoor rodeo and fair in Saskatchewan. Everyone looks forward to taking part in the four-day event, a true celebration of cowboy boots and prairie roots."

The slogan for this year's Frontier Days is 'cowboy boots and prairie roots.

A full schedule of rodeo, concert, a pancake breakfast, and 4-H action was all given out at council.

Councillors excited for the event then shared some of their favourite aspects of Frontier Days, both in terms of the celebration itself, as well as what it does for the community.

City Councillor George Bowditch said that some of the agricultural events grow his interest.

"4-H shows are something that's really interesting for me because [if] you get there bright and early and you get to see all the work that goes into to," he said in response to the presentation from the Swift Current Ag & Ex-members. "It's just not showing the animal, it's interesting all the work that you put into it. It's a great time."

Councillor Ryan Plewis spoke on the economic side of things.

He said that the event, one of the biggest to take place in Swift Current, was huge the city.

"Not only is it fun, not only is it a really interesting thing for residents and people from outside of the community to come to and experience Swift Current, but it's a huge economic impact as well for our community."

Frontier Days kick off on June 26 and lasts until the 29.
