A hockey tournament to support organizations that played a helping role after the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus crash that claimed 16 lives and injured more is kicking off in Swift Current today.

Ryan Gobeil works for the Swift Current Broncos, and his younger brother Morgan was injured in the crash. This weekend Ryan is putting on the tournament, with other festivities, to raise money for organizations including STARS Air Ambulance, Ronald McDonald House, and Royal University Hospital Foundation.

Over $15,000,000 was raised on a GoFundMe to support players and families affected, but now Ryan wants to help organizations that played a big role in the aftermath.

"The last month of my life's been pretty eye opening," he said. "The type of support people can provide for other people who are in need. I've always liked to thing I'm one of those guys that would like to provide support to other people, but it's good to know that this is my time of need and people are coming out for me too."

Initially a dozen teams were registered to play in the four-on-four tournament, but that number is down to eight now.

"At the end of the day that's not really where we do a bulk of our fundraising anyway, so it was never about getting a lot of teams, it was more about getting people to come out tomorrow night to watch the [Swift Current] Broncos take home the championship."

Game 5 of the WHL Final will be played on the curling rink side of the Innovation Credit Union iPlex, with Swift Current one win away from a trip to the Memorial Cup in Regina.

The tournament, originally slated to run through Sunday, is now only going on Friday and Saturday. Friday Bakersfield will be playing live music during the cabaret.
