A pair of Grade 10 Swift Current Comprehensive High School students were in Ottawa for the Forum for Young Canadians.

The forum is a program for young adults aged 15 to 19 to provide students with an opportunity to learn the importance of public affairs and so they can help others understand Canadian politics.

Students Chloe Hess and Meadow Coates attended the forum and Hess said that their trip to the nation's capital was definitely worth it.

"It was so much fun," she said. "I'm definitely happy we went. We were able to see some amazing thing and meet some amazing people from all over Canada."

Hess said that they got an opportunity to learn a lot about politics.

"We were able to see the Senate and the House of Commons. We got to listen to the speaker through both the Senate and the House of Commons, so we definitely learned a lot there," she said. "We were able to see some of the senators in the Senate and some members of parliament in the House of Commons, and have a good discussion with them which was really interesting for us."

Coates added that they got a chance to participate in a team simulation and learn about how federal politics work and also had speakers talk to them such as Leader of the Green Party, Elizabeth May and other MP's.

Hess said that one of her favourite things was a panel that showed them what it takes to run in federal politics.

"We had this one panel that was very interesting about running in a federal election," she said. "We learned basically how we would go about it if we wanted to run in the future and we learned what politics is all about and how basically to get into it. I think that was a definitely interested panel that we were able to see."

Coates said that the reason they were so eager to go to the forum is that they both share a strong interest in politics and the forum did nothing but increase there interest.

Earlier this week Hess and Coates presented what they did while at the forum to students at the SCCHS.

"I think some people are definitely interested in what we did and a lot of people were taking notes,"  Hess said. "I think some people wanted to go to this and I think this would be a great opportunity to also do this after we did."

Coates added that by presenting they hope that they get more interest from Swift Current and that also Saskatchewan students will be more interested in attending the forum.

"We really hope more from Swift Current and Saskatchewan will go to the forum because there is a very large lack of representation in the prairies provinces," she said. "There is like ten people from Saskatchewan out of like 140 kids, so we are hoping that we can get more kids from Saskatchewan to go to increase the awareness from our issues."

They added that overall the forum was an amazing experience and that they are happy that some people are already considering attending the forum next year.
