Great Plains College welding student Chad Hittel brought home gold from the Skills Canada Saskatchewan competition in Prince Albert.

He won first place in the post secondary welding category and will move on to nationals in Toronto on June 4th.

His welding instructor Jared McKenzie is proud of Hittel's work.

"It's great for him because, not just winning, but the experience of competing, learning to deal with the pressure of being in a competition, and especially for his resume. He will be able to say he's a provincial champion and that he competed at a national level, the best in the country," said McKenzie.

He says that preparation for nationals includes an extra 5-10 hours per week of practice time, time he is willing to give.

"It will be phenomenal, to be out there representing Great Plains college and Saskatchewan kind of all in one. I'm expecting him to do very well, he's a very talented student," said McKenzie.

Hittel was given a blueprint and six hours to complete the project he was presented with, testing all aspects of welding and blueprint reading.

He surpassed the skills of the 16 other competitors in his category, and won first place, a new feat for the college.

"We've never had a student win gold from our college before, we've competed in this three times and we've won a bronze before. But winning gold enables you to go and compete in nationals. It's huge for our program to say we trained the best in the province," said McKenzie.

The winner of nationals moves on to compete in the worlds competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015.
