A handful of members from the Swift Current Titans Wrestling Club travelled halfway across the country this past weekend to see how they fared against Canada's best.

Eight locals took to the mats at the 2024 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Mississauga, Ont. with over 500 athletes competing in three divisions, U19, U17, and U15.

Curtis Biem, the head coach of the Swift Current Titans Wrestling Club, said they were thrilled to give their wrestlers a chance to attend the prestigious event.

"They really wrestled up to their potential," he said. "We had a couple of matches that were close losses and a couple of matches that were close wins. That's going to happen anytime among the best in the country."

Gull Lake's Levynn Toney emerged from the girl's U17 bracket with a silver medal.

"She's been with the club for several years now and started in middle school," he said. "Over the years, her skills have really improved. She's a really strong athlete and we look for more big things to come."

Swift Current's Carter Stad competing in the U17 boy's division and Payton Allin, from Success, participating in the U15 girl's category both posted sixth-place results.

"They really showed they were building towards this competition," he said.

Alex Painchaud and Daynan Britton wrestled their last matches at the tournament representing the club with both set to graduate.

"They'll be moving onto other things beyond our club for next year," he said. "It's sad to say goodbye to those kids."

Talon Tumback, Dakota Hurl, and Ukiah Corey rounded out the Swift Current Titans Wrestling Club contingent that made the trek to southern Ont. for nationals.
