Early this winter it seems outbreaks at hospitals have been occurring more and more. Cypress Health Region wants to remind the public that the best way to prevent infection is proper hand hygiene.

Dr David Torr is the consulting medical health officer with the Cypress Health Region with some tips.

Full Interview Dr. David Torr"Proper hand washing, i.e thorough hand washing and frequent hand washing because our hands are always touching surfaces which very easily can be contaminated and we can easily pick or spread germs," said Dr. Torr. "So before and after the washroom, after touching services, hand rails, door knobs, after shaking hands, before and after eating."

Dr. Torr added that to prevent respiratory infection to make sure you cough into your sleeve and not your hands.

Also hand sanitizer can be used in conjunction with hand washing but should not be used as a replacement.
