Every year volunteers are recruited for the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Heart Month Campaign throughout February.

Across the province 1300 volunteers went door to door to collect donations for the campaign, and in Swift Current around 75 volunteers gathered for the cause.

"This year our goal in Swift Current was $11,000," said Manager of Fund Development, Karla Rempel. "We had already exceeded that goal, and then one of the final kids that came in actually had a $10,000 donation from one donor, which has taken the campaign to over $20,000 in Swift Current this year. The work that we can do with that... Every dollar brings survivors closer to coming home, and that really makes a difference. One of the great things about my job is I get to talk to survivors or I get to talk to the family members of survivors, and to know what that means to them that the money that's being raised is doing that research and bringing more people home, it's just the most amazing feeling."

The Heart and Stroke Foundation's Heart Month Campaign has been implemented across Canada since the 1950's, raising awareness and money for life saving research for nearly as long as the foundation has been established.

"It's something that effects so many people. I can't think of one place where I've ever been where somebody somewhere couldn't think of someone who has experienced this, or they themselves have experienced heart disease or stroke," added Rempel. "We could not do this without our volunteers. Provincially we only have about 20 full time staff, and then we also hire part time term staff as well to help us run the campaign. There's just no way that we could possibly do this without our volunteers. They are an amazing  group of people and so passionate. They bring so much to their role, and we absolutely appreciate everything that they do."

Last year in Canada, more than $10 million was raised across the country.
