Tonight, the Herbert Lions Club celebrates seventy years of service in the community.

"The club was formed on January 13th, 1946 and from what I understand we're one of the longest continuously running Lions Club in Saskatchewan. The hall was built by past members and the ribbon cutting was in 1970," said Bob MacFarland, President of the Herbert Lions who moved to town ten years ago.

Former members will be arriving in Herbert, including a Lions member who has been active in the club for sixty-one years and now resides in Moose Jaw.  Supper tickets are already sold but the public is invited for the initial cocktails are 4 o'clock, as well as an open mic at a quarter to six. Historical photos and mementos will be shared.

Now with about a dozen members, MacFarland says the club is always looking for new members, adding that social clubs hold prairie towns together.

"I believe they have a huge impact. There are so many clubs that are finding it tough to keep going and so many clubs have folded in different areas across the three prairies province, that I know of. Sometimes it's tough to keep it going but you just do it because you know it's needed by the community and by the people."
