Many people are out on the highways travelling during the summer, and the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline is here to help.

During the summer, the Highway Hotline is updated to inform motorists of construction zones, flooding, forest fires, or other events.

"They should always check it before they leave on a trip," said Communications Consultant with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, Sonja Orban. "Basically what happens during the summer is that the Hotline is updated on an as needed basis, so instead of offering the 24/7 service that we have in the winter, we update as we need it or as new information comes in. However, it's important to point out that during major events the Hotline does revert back to the 24/7 service."

With a record highways budget of $842 million, a number of construction zones are expected to take effect this summer.

"People often check it out to see where construction areas are or if there are any incidents icons, which are often a sign of a road closure due to flooding," she added. "We also have the route locater, so people going on vacation can check out the Highway Hotline and look at the route locater. It highlights that section of road and you can see if there are any construction or flooding events on that road."

Orban says ferry status updates are also offered through the site with locations included, adding that road closures and travel not recommended alerts can be found on the Highway Hotline Twitter and Facebook.

The Highway Hotline receives more than four million inquiries every year, along with about 57,000 followers on social media.
