It was a shortened sitting of the Legislative assembly that marked its end on Friday. But it was one that saw a lot brought forward in three weeks.

Everett Hindley, the MLA for Swift Current, is happy with what the session accomplished and said that it was an important session in a number of ways during COVID-19.

"I think it was important as a provincial government that we passed some of these (measures) to help grow the economy and to show the people of the province that there is some confidence here from the provincial government that we're going to weather these challenging times that we're all facing."

The priority of the sitting from the beginning was of course on the budget, but also on a number of stimulus packages and other measures that the government hopes will set the province on a proper footing as it moves towards reopening its economy.

Hindley cites the recent Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) funding as well as the inactive well program as examples of such measures. But he also adds that the focus, by necessity, was also on healthcare and making sure that the health care system was fully prepared to battle COVID-19.

In a letter to Premier Scott Moe, Ryan Meili, the leader of the NDP opposition, pushed for another sitting in September prior to the election but was rebuffed.

Hindley doesn't see another sitting in September as being in the cards but admits that stranger things have happened in cases of emergency. He points out however that this most recent three week sitting was not an emergency session, despite its truncated length; and so another of its kind would not apply.

"I guess if there was a need on an emergency basis. We've seen it happen before (where) the government has to reconvene the legislature to deal with a number of issues. But we fully intend to be going into a provincial election campaign this fall and then there will be a session after the election is done."

The election date has not yet been decided on, but under Saskatchewan law, it must be held no later than October 26, 2020.
